Painted Flowers and Vase Card

This simple painting activity becomes a lovely card that would be great to use for Mother’s Day, Grandparents Day, birthdays, or any other special occasion. It’s a simple as downloading the template and getting out the washable tempera paint.

This card uses the technique described in the Tinfoil Painting post found here. In fact, it would be wise to have kids go through that painting activity to practice the technique before beginning the card of the painted flowers and vase.

Materials:

  • washable tempera paint in green and other colors. We like these.

  • tray or paper plate to serve as a paint palette

  • balls of aluminum foil

  • medium or fine paintbrush like these

  • flower vase template printed on mixed media paper or cardstock (details on accessing the download below)

  • extra mixed media paper if starting with the Tinfoil Painting activity (mentioned below)

Steps:

  1. This activity is based on the Tinfoil Painting process described in this post. We recommend starting with that activity to practice the technique before working on the downloaded vase template.

  2. Once you’re done practicing painting flowers with tinfoil, add more paint to your palette and decide if you need fresh aluminum foil. (If you’re switching to different colors of paint for the Flowers and Vase card, you’ll want clean foil balls, so your paints don’t mix—unless you want them to.)

  3. Print the free download of the flower vase template. (You can access the free download inside the Free Resource Library. Gain immediate access to all our handmade printables by subscribing to our monthly newsletter, using the form at the very bottom of the page.) We recommend printing directly onto a sheet of trimmed mixed media paper or heavy cardstock.

  4. You will only be working on the right side of the printout. The left side will be the back of the card.

  5. Begin by using the paintbrush to paint 3-5 flower stems extending out of the vase. Feel free to make them slightly different lengths. Some can be straight and some can be curved in different directions.

  6. Next, use balls of tinfoil dipped in a small amount of tempera paint to stamp an abstract flower at the end of each painted stem.

  7. Now you’re ready to paint the vase. Use the paintbrush to outline the vase in a color of your choice. You can fill the vase with color to make it look solid (painting over the stems), or you can leave it clear so the stems show. You could also make it appear to be a clear vase and paint water inside with the stems. Any of those options look nice.

  8. Leave the card to dry fully.

  9. Once dry, fold the card in half. A bone folder like this one can be helpful when creasing thick paper.

  10. Write a note inside, sign your handmade painted card, and deliver it to a loved one.
